Same name, two countries

Cuban Cohiba vs Dominican Cohiba

Our catalog lists 23 Cuban Cohiba lines and 19 non-Cuban ones, made in Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua, and United States.

There are two Cohibas. The original is Cuban, made by Habanos S.A. It began in the 1960s as a private cigar for Fidel Castro and went on public sale in 1982.

In the United States, the Cohiba trademark belongs to General Cigar, which sells its own Cohiba made outside Cuba. Same name, unrelated cigars.

The honest difference

The fastest tell is where you are standing. Cuban Cohibas cannot legally be sold in the US, so a Cohiba from a US shop is the General Cigar version, and many of those carry a small red dot on the band. Outside the US, look for “Habana” on the band and the Habanos warranty seal on the box.

Common questions

Is a Cohiba from a US cigar shop Cuban?

No. Cuban cigars cannot legally be sold in the US, and the Cohiba name there belongs to General Cigar, which makes its Cohibas outside Cuba. They are a different cigar, not a copy of the Cuban one.

Where are non-Cuban Cohiba cigars made?

Our catalog lists 19 non-Cuban Cohiba lines, made in Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua, and United States, alongside 23 Cuban lines.
